3 Things To Consider Before Your Kitchen DIY

Before and After

Deciding to remodel your home is a fun and exciting time, that includes looking at Pinterest ideas, color palettes and styles. But should you tackle this job by yourself or hire a pro? Leanna Tatum with Beyond Cabinets & Design

Deciding to remodel your home is a fun and exciting time, that includes looking at Pinterest ideas, color palettes and styles. But should you tackle this job by yourself or hire a pro?

When envisioning your dream home, local expert Leanna Tatum with Beyond Cabinets & Design suggest that there are a few things to consider before doing it on your own.

  1. What kind of time commitment is this project?  With your day job, relationships, and everyday duties, will you be able to fully give time to this side project?
  1. Can you physically handle the lifting, cutting, and man-power that comes with tear-out and installation? Remodeling comes with lots of physical work, so you need to make sure that you- or your friends and family have the ability to help.
  1. How big is your remodel?  Smaller DIY jobs are more attainable, such as replacing a sink or a cabinet, but sometimes large renovations take months of planning or professional oversight.

When you hire a professional, they typically have an entire team targeted at each step of your project, or a referral to other businesses. This includes a designer, installers, and site management.

With a DIY project, make sure you plan in advance to cover all of these areas.

Pros and Cons

Hiring an expert or working with a business such as Beyond Cabinets & Design can take some of that stress off your plate. But what are the pros of doing it yourself?

PROS of DIY:

  • Possibility of saving money on labor hours
  • Satisfaction of finishing a project with your own hands
  • Creating your own work timeline

CONS OF DIY

  • Possibly dangerous work
  • Knowing that mistakes are inevitable and sometime costly
  • It might not match your creative vision

All of these pros and cons are technical and doesn’t include needing permits or considering selling your house in the future.

The bottom line is that Tatum suggests that you should consider all aspects before jumping into a project. Don’t forget that all spaces are different and you can utilize your own DIY skills on manageable projects and hire out professionals for the rest, as both have their own set of positives.

Happy remodeling!
