The Mayor of a Christian County Community is stepping down amid controversy about her legally being able to hold the office.

In a press release from Sumners-Schwartz Law recapped by Ozarks First, Melissa Ann Venable resigned her position as Mayor of Billings Monday after questions came up as to her residency in the city.

According to court documents, Venable had been living at an address in neighboring Marionville in Lawrence County since 2020 instead of the address she had lived at before that in Billings. Venable denies the accusations though several witnesses claimed she was rarely at the address listed in her Declaration of Candidacy. She has a court date scheduled on the charges of false declaration coming up in January.

More information on the story can be found on the Ozarks First Website.
