Some Trout Dies After Power Outage Drains Water at Fish Hatchery

Quick action by officials with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission keeps the loss of trout to a minimum after a power outage at the Bull Shoals Dam last week.

According to a report from the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette posted by KTLO, the power outage drained some water from the White River Fish Hatchery. While some fish died, many fish were moved to areas with deeper water. while the power was being restored.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Operations Project Manager Mark Case told KTLO that the outage occurred during the early morning hours of Dec. 2 due to an electrical fault on one of the dam’s units. Because it happened overnight, there wasn't an alarm to open up an emergency supply of water.

Eventually anglers notified AGFC officials of the issue and began the process of refilling the water and moving the fish.

A complete recap can be found on the KTLO Website.
