The season ends abruptly for the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Wild Card Series.
The Cardinals, who sported the National Leagues fourth best record, were ousted in two games by the Philadelphia Phillies in the best two of three series. The Cardinals were two outs away from the win in Friday's opening game when the Phillies scored six runs to win the opener 6-3 before shutting out the Redbirds 2-0 in Saturday's second game.
The Cardinals were not the only favorites ousted in the Wildcard Round as the New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays also lost home series over the weekend to San Diego and Seattle respectively. Cleveland was the only home favorite to win, sweeping Tampa Bay in the opening round.
The Divisional Series get underway tomorrow with the match-ups to feature Cleveland at New York and Seattle at Houston in the American League while in the National League, its San Diego at Los Angeles and Philadelphia at Atlanta.
